A Korean Expedition
One of my preferences is to fight historical, or near historical, opponents. Having recently played a number of games between Japanese armies of the Sengoku Jidai period it was with anticipation I prepared to face another players well painted Yi Dynasty Koreans (IV/78) army. While I’ve had my Japanese for many years I’ve never used them against the Koreans. Historically the Japanese invasion of Korea occurred in 1592, and therefore is officially outside the period of the DBA rules. However, the later armies are effectively the same as those covered by the rules, excluding an increasing number of arquebus from 1542. As a result only a little historical license must be taken to accommodate an earlier invasion of Korea.

Conquest 2017 Results

BBDBA, Competition Reports, DBA
Over the weekend the annual Conquest Wargames Convention was held here in Christchurch. As with previous years it included a 15mm DBA competition.
This year the DBA competition comprised three sections which ran in sequence.
The first two sections used standard DBA with one section of three rounds using Ancient armies while the second section used Dark Age or Medieval armies. With six rounds across both sections and only six players, each player fought four opponents once and one player twice.

A Letter from Malacca
Last night we deployed some armies for a fascinating game of BBDBA. With my regular opponent was keen to use his Post Mongol Samurai (IV/59b) I opted to use my Sumatrans or Malay (IV/37a). My Sumatrans were built for DBR and comprised considerably more troops than BBDBA requires. Given the period I thought it more appropriate them to represent the Sultanate of Malacca. Despite having the army I’ve not used it in DBA or BBDBA before due to the warband being based three figures per base, as required for DBR, rather than the DBA requirement of four per base. However, I was interested to field six elephants in BBDBA and the combination of elephants and warband are to me fascinating. Clearly, it would be an experiment at best, a disaster at worse.

Woolston DBA Challenge
The theme for the 2018 Woolston DBA Challenge is “Greece, Macedonian and the Punic Wars (430 BC to 146 BC)”. This theme covers the Peloponnesian Wars, the rise of Macedonia and the resultant various Macedonian Succesors states as well as the Punic Wars. It ends with the final defeat of Carthage in 146 BC.
General Format:
Rules: DBA 3.0 Scale: 15mm Armies: Optional two list format, see below for details Date: Sunday 7th of January 2018 Venue: Woolston Club, Christchurch Start Time: 10.00am Table Size: 600mm x 600mm Terrain: Players are to provide their own terrain. There will be a total of five rounds during the day with play finishing around 5pm.
Scoring:
We will be using the new 0-8 scoring, but with a slight event addition. A player that uses two armies will receive a bonus point. Hopefully we will see additional variety! Refer to the Army Selection section below for details on using this second army.
Registration:
No registration fee applies to this event. The event is open to members of the Christchurch Wargames Club and others by invitation. Please register by emailing the Keith McNelly the DBA organiser your interest and army selection with list names and dates prior to 3rd January to allow a list of armies to be circulated prior. Please advise if your a club member.
Army Selection:
Players may select one or two armies from the following list. If two they must change from their first list to their second list after the players second game. The second list must have a list date that at least starts later than that previously used and it must have a different list code. The second list may be a different nationality.
Once elements are chosen no variation can be made between games. This rule allows players to transition through the 300 odd years of the theme. Normal ally selection applies.
Lists must be submitted prior to the event with the name, list code and specific year. Elements are chosen on the day prior to determining the invader. I suggest you write your selection down.

Ce système est génial. Ça permet d’éviter de faire rencontrer des armées incompatibles. Jouer Book II c’est impossible quand il y a du book IV sur la table.

Last night I managed a couple of games which found my Japanese (Post Mongol Samurai IV/59b) engaged against Ben’s Koreans (Yi Dynasty Koreans IV/78). It is an interesting historical engagement, with some challenges for both commanders.
The Korean commander, has been looking for some alternate tactics for his Koreans, which have an interesting and arguably challenging mix of troops. As part of this he was keen to place his recently completed fortress, modelled on the Japanese castle of Ulsan built in Korea. The scratch built, and themed for the period, castle provided an excellent terrain piece for our games.

Sosthenes of Macedonia
What makes a good game? Well for me it’s well painted figures on visually pleasing terrain and against a pleasant opponent. Fortunately I have this in most games these days so last night’s encounter looked set to produce another excellent game. Indeed, Andrew and I deployed our 15mm figures for a Successor encounter using BBDBA and the game looked the part. I haven’t unfortunately many photos of the game but here at least are a few along with a brief description.
Facing Demetrius was Sosthenes of Macedonia (a Later Macedonia Successor variant) who positioned the right flank of his army on gently rising ground while extending his centre and left towards a rocky hill on his left. Demetrius, positioning himself on his left flank, ordered the advance. His initial focus was to be an attack against the enemy right where he hoped to destroy a large body of Galatians with his xystophoroi . Fearing this Sosthenes reorganised his right flank in a series of complex manoeuvres. As a result, the Demetrius’ early attack on the left, where he had massed his best troops stalled.

we actually played two games, but below is a brief summary our first game where I fielded a reasonably historic opponent in the form of a Successor army under Demetrius. Now I should have used an army under Ptolemy Keraunos, but I wanted to use some elephants.
The Greeks were found to be defending, as you do when the barbarians invade from the north. Demetrius deployed his army some distance from the city of Phileselis, which was lightly held by Greek mercenaries, with his right protected by the Aegean coast. His centre comprised his phalangites and his left his cavalry, a mix of xystophoroi extended by Greek subjects and comprising both heavy and light cavalry. Between his mounted wing and the phalangites he placed his elephants.
Above and below, the Galatian host with the city of Phileselis visible on the Galatian left. In the photo below the Greek mercenaries have retired from the city.

Conquest is held each year during November in Christchurch, New Zealand and is organised by our local gaming store Comics Compulsion. All registrations for Conquest is via Comics Compulsion.
As with previous years a 15mm DBA Ancients competition will be held as part of the larger Conquest Convention to be held over the weekend of the 10th & 11th of November 2018.
The venue is the Woolston Club, 43 Hargood Street, Woolston, Christchurch.
The DBA Competitions comprise two one day tournaments each held over seperate days. Players are welcome to enter either, or both, DBA tournaments.
DBA Tournament – Saturday:
This tournament and uses 12 element armies. The following format will be used:
Rules: DBA 3.0 Scale: 15mm Date: Saturday 10th of November 2018 Start: Player Briefing 8:45am Rounds: Six games with three using Ancient and three Medieval armies Table Size: 600mm x 600mm Army Lists:
The competition will comprise six rounds divided into an Ancient and Medieval Section each of three rounds. The Ancient Section requires army with a list dating between 3000BC to 450AD. The Medieval Section requires an army with a list date from 451AD-1520AD. Each list is limited to a specific year or sub-period with no change of elements during the course of the Section from those selected before the invader and defender is determined in the first round.
Please send your two army selections, including allied contingents, defined by list name, code and year if applicable, to the organiser one week prior.
Big Battle DBA Tournament – Sunday:
The following format will be used for the Big Battle DBA Tournament.
Rules: DBA 3.0 Scale: 15mm Date: Sunday 11th of November 2018 Start: 8:30am Rounds: Three rounds each of 2 1/4 hours. Table Size: 1200mm x 600mm
Deployment:
The defender will deploy his entire army and then the attacker will deploy his entire army.
Army Lists:
Armies require a list date between 3000BC to 450AD. Each list is limited to a specific year or sub-period. The army should be organised into commands prior to the competition. To speed setup and deployment no change of elements, or organisation of commands, except for PIP dice allocation, will be permitted between rounds.
Please send your army selections, including allied contingents, defined by list name, code and year if applicable, organised by command to the organiser one week prior.

Ancient & Medieval Wargaming NEW-ZELAND
Au cours des derniers mois, d’excellentes vidéos DBA ont été publiées et j’ai bien aimé les regarder. Ces vidéos de DBA sont principalement conçues pour illustrer la façon de jouer au jeu. Elles constituent donc une excellente ressource pour les nouveaux joueurs et une source de divertissement pour ceux d'entre nous qui possèdent une expérience de DBA.

Incroyable d’imaginer que la télévision publique britannique ait tournée ces émissions! C’est juste dingue. On pourrait faire ça maintenant sur you tube avec les moyens supplémentaires accordés par la technologie.

Il y a eu aussi Time Commanders sur la BBC au milieu des années 2000. Jeu par équipe recréant de grandes batailles avec un intéressant système de chaîne de commande, simulé avec le moteur de Rome Total War. Très chouette également.

Edward on Campaign
My regular DBA opponent is accomodating in supporting my preference for historically plausible opponents. As a result over the last couple of weeks my Wars of the Roses English have been campaigning in Europe against historical and historically plausible opponents. My expedition was of course based on Edward IV’s expedition in 1475. They were to face, last night, an historical opponent in the form of French Ordonnance (IV/82a).

Mycenaean Expeditions
Last night I was fortunate to play a couple of games as part of a DBA 3.0 rules refresher for a good friend. Dusting off his existing DBA armies Robin fielded two armies over the evening. These were his first game of DBA in many years. However, being a veteran HotT player I was sure he would quickly recall the rules.
The first army deployed was his Minoan & Early Mycenaean (I/18). This list is of course based on the Aegean Palace Kingdoms. It has been an army I have often planned to build but haven’t been organised enough to start. The army comprises a core of chariots, a phalanx of heavy infantry armed with spear (4Pk) as well as an option of light troops in the form of Pylians (4Ax). Finally it has several psiloi. Robin opted for heavy chariots and a smaller phalanx.
Lacking a suitable historical opponent for the Mycenaeans I opted to field Later Carthaginians (II/32a) who are at best a challenging army with an eclectic mix of troops.

An English Crusade
Our second game of the evening was an encounter between my Wars of the Roses English (IV/83a) and Robin’s Ottomans (IV55a). Clearly the English were on a crusade likely in search of the Kingdom of Prestor John.
It has been a long time since I’ve seen the Ottoman host deployed. As with all Robin’s armies they are well painted and based. However, I felt they would suffer badly against the English longbow. I envisaged a short game and one that was one sided. It transpired I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Conquest 2018 BBDBA
On the second day of the Conquest 2018 Convention a three round Big Battle DBA tournament was held. This is the third year we have had a 15mm BBDBA event at Conquest. Armies comprised 36 elements with all armies having a list date of prior to 450 AD. The tournament was limited to just three rounds with each round limited to 2 1/4 hours including setup.

My first 15mm Ancients army was a Polybian Roman army assembled for DBA 1.0 back in 1990. At the time DBA was relatively popular in my local town but having to relocate and keen for opponents I reluctantly expanded the army to DBM size. With my local opponents At the time more interested in competition games, and my dislike for non-historical games or at least those between armies of too great a time difference, my Romans were dispatched to the back of the cupboard.
Eventually some interest in DBA locally allowed me to pull the Polybian Romans out of storage and to repainted sufficient for standard DBA purposes. The remainder languished, yet remained on my refurbishment list for the “future”.

Cette semaine, mon nouveau Later Hebrew (I / 34b) a pris le terrain dans l'espoir qu'ils prospéreraient comme décrit dans 1 Rois. En guise de contexte, l'armée a une liste de 968 à 800 avant JC et couvre donc la période du roi Salomon et de ses successeurs dans les royaumes divisés de Juda et d'Israël. L’armée est principalement composée d’infanterie, modélisée 3Ax, de quelques archers d’infanterie légère (Ps) et de plusieurs chars légers. Avec une forte agression, il promettait d’être un défi pour l’armée. L'armée est un achat récent de peinture, chose que je ne fais pas souvent ces jours-ci, avec les figures peintes et basées par Nathan Ward.

La revanche de Peucestas

Depuis la mort d'Alexandre, un certain nombre de ses généraux ont été enfermés dans des campagnes meurtrières, chacune essayant de décider de l'avenir de l'héritage d'Alexandre. Deux d'entre eux étaient Peucestas et Lysimaque. Chacune d'elles avait recruté des armées et malgré un noyau similaire, construit autour de la phalange macédonienne, se distinguait à plusieurs égards.
La Phalange de Peucestas était soutenu par un fort contingent d'hoplites mercenaires qui assuraient la supériorité à découvert contre l'armée de Lysimaque qui, bien que possédant une phalange de taille similaire, manquait de la quantité de lourds mercenaires. Au lieu de cela, Lysimaque avait recruté une gamme d'infanterie légèrement armée mieux adaptée au terrain accidenté. Alors que les deux armées comprenaient xystophoroï et de la cavalerie légère, Peucestas les compléta avec un nombre considérable de cavalerie lourde de l'est.

En raison de la taille des jeux DBA et de la possibilité de créer plus facilement des armées par paires historiques, il est relativement simple de relier plusieurs batailles pour former une campagne linéaire ou narrative. Au cours des dernières semaines, au fil du temps, mon fils et moi avons retracé les campagnes de Pyrrhus d'Epire en Italie et en Sicile en utilisant son armée et celle de notre propre armée.
En guise de recyclage, Pyrrhus entra dans le sud de l'Italie en 280 av. J.-C. avec une armée d'Epeirot pour soutenir Tarente contre le pouvoir grandissant de Rome. Pyrrhus a ensuite combattu dans les batailles d'Héraclée (280 avant JC) et d'Asculum (279 avant JC), où il a remporté une victoire très coûteuse. Dès 277 av. J.-C., Pyrrhus avait quitté l'Italie et faisait campagne en Sicile, où il espérait créer un nouveau royaume. Mais alors que la campagne contre les Carthaginois stagnait, il repartit pour l'Italie. En 275 avant JC, Pyrrhus affronta les Romains à Beneventum, mais fut vaincu au combat. Incapable de vaincre Rome, il finit par partir poursuivre ses guerres ailleurs.
L'armée de Pyrrhus serait représentée par la liste type de la DBA (II / 28b).
Pyrrhus choisirait une plus petite phalange et compléterait son armée par des hoplites d'Italiot et de Sicile. Bien que cela ne soit pas parfaitement historique, les Romains seraient représentés par la liste polybienne (II / 33) dans les trois batailles, ce qui permettrait au moins à Joël d'utiliser ses propres Romains, ce qui lui permettrait bien sûr de se battre avec une grande détermination. Les Carthaginois seraient représentés par la liste des débuts carthaginois (I / 61b) et dans les deux batailles, le joueur carthaginois choisi pour aligner de lourds chars, bien que moins de chars et plus de cavalerie aient pu être plus réalistes.
